The Reuben Sandwich

For some reason, lately I've been extraordinarily preoccupied with thoughts of food. I had a doctor's appointment last week and I was really worried that I might have gained a slew of pounds. But, alas and to my delight, I had gained not a single pound! Okay. That's a lie; I gained four pounds in the last year. Four little itty bitty pounds. (But, come to think of it, if you try to picture four pounds of pure fat..well, a-hem..it's not a pretty thought. But oh well..)

ANYWAY, I've been craving various certain delectables; one day buffalo wings smothered in Louisiana hot sauce, another day, a big box of Captain D's fish. Today I'm craving a Reuben Sandwich.

After I post this, I'm going to the store and get some rye bread, corned beef, (or pastrami. it's basically the same thing.) thousand island dressing, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. To my benefit, I don't care for dressing on my Reuben. so that's a bit of calorie intake chopped off right there. (Maybe I'll double the Swiss cheese to make up for it, tho.)

Most people take slices of corned beef and top a pile of it with sauerkraut or cole slaw and then melt Swiss cheese on top of that. I don't do it that way; I chop up the corned beef and cook it right in with the sauerkraut. Yum yum YUMMMMMMYY!

I did one of my obsessive searches on youtube.com to see if there was a video about Reuben sandwiches, Sure enough, I found this..and who woulda known Charlie Chaplin was inadvertently responsible for the invention of the Reuben! (and who is 'Reuben,' anyway? Watch this and you'll soon discover..):

Oh yes, I almost forgot to add; A Reuben just is not a Reuben without the pickle on the side.

  1. Up here, as well as corned beef and pastrami, we have something called Montreal Smoked Meat. I'm not clear what the actual difference is, although I've always thought that Montreal Smoked Meat, unlike pastrami and corned beef, is not brined. For sure the taste difference between Montreal Smoked Meat and corned beef seems obvious if you taste the two one after the other, I'd be hard-pressed to describe just what the difference is. Personally, I like them all.

  2. It looks good but I generally only eat once a day and it hasn't got to be anything fancy, some days just a hotcake does the job.

I eat to live, not live to eat.

  3. I've been quite hungry lately and I think it's the combination of heat and hard work. All the sweating I am craving water and protein.

    i love ruebens great video!

I ate a vegan Rueben about a moth ago at the Chicago Diner...it was quite good.

  4. mister anchovy, I've never heard of Montreal Smoked Beef! It would be interesting to taste the difference between the brined and unbrined meats. I think the difference between corned beef and pastrami has something to do with the brining process too, but i'm not sure about that. It might be that the only difference there is that corned beef is in brisket form and pastrami isn't.

Billy, I must admit, I try to eat about five little meals a day. If I don't, I can feel the difference in my body because my sugar level falls too low and then I don't want to eat at all.

Candy, I never considered the heat as to being the cause of my food 'obsession!' I bet you're right tho!
As for vegan food; I've steered away from all that stuff because it just doesn't sound appetizing to me but I've heard it realy is quite good. I suppose I should give it a try tho. I tend to be a picky eater anyway.
    Isn't that video awesome??!!

  5. I LOVE reubens! One of my favorite foods ever. And Arby's, though fast food, has a pretty good one. The one in your pic looks pretty damned awesome, too ;-) I hope yours turned out just as tasty.

  7. I don't picture heat as having to do with a food obsession, who wants to eat when it's hot? Other than ice cream and other cold treats. Most likely eating fancy things is like a prozac to you, it brings you a little joy to taste something good, lots of folks are like that, that's why there is a lot of obese people in this country, world actually.

Hey, I'm going camping for a few days, the rest of you monkeys are in charge while I'm gone. Good luck with that.

  8. STAY AWAY FROM VEGAN "CHEESE"!!!!!!!!!!
It may be the most disgusting thing I've ever put in my mouth- my dogs wouldn't even touch it, and they love fruit (they have to steal it to get it, though, because it's bad for them), and vegetables, meat, bread, yogurt...pretty much anything that won't eat them. But they won't eat vegan cheese. And neither will I. But the Morning Star products are awesome. Veggie burgers rule. Try some of it. But- and I can't stress this enough- DON'T try the cheese.
I'm not a big fan of reuben sammichs either. I love food- but I could live my whole life and never put saurkraut in my mouth and wouldn't feel like I was missing anything.
Also, try the Samrat Restaurant there by Home Depot. The Vegetarian Byrani is AMAZING- and make sure you get it medium spicy. I don't know if you can take the "real" spicy, and bland just sucks :) . But, totally worth the money, go get some.
